Around The World and Back to Glasgow: Donna’s Story

Donna McGee was born in 1957 in the Cadder area of Glasgow and has lived a remarkable life across the world before settling in to Campsie View Care Home. After attending school and growing up close by in Glasgow, Donna emigrated to Canada when she was just 18 years old. Her impressive career led her to become the youngest and first female manager of the Bank of Nova Scotia. Once she returned to the UK, she went on to become a buyer for the book publishers Harper Collins.

Donna has one daughter, Laura, and three grandsons who all visit Campsie View regularly. Spending time with her family and maintaining that special bond is Donna’s favourite thing to do.

A Life Well Travelled

Travelling was an important part of Donna’s life and the staff at Campsie View love hearing her stories from all the places she has visited in her amazing life. One of her favourites was Monaco, where she saw Grace Kelly and her husband Prince Rainier III on the balcony of the palace. Other highlights of her vast travels include Hawaii, Dubai and Bangladesh, where she attended her niece’s wedding; she also recalls a visit to Washington, where she remembers seeing the president of the United States at the time.

A Home Well Loved

Back near our wonderful city of Glasgow, Donna loves living here at Campsie View Care Home now and has made her bedroom feel just like home. Donna has said that she feels more confident since moving in and loves the fact that she can come and go for a fresh air or smoke break whenever she wishes, under the mindful eye of staff. This is just one of the ways we empower residents’ independence here at Campsie View, with the peace of mind that the team are always on hand if needed.

Donna’s favourite thing to do now is going shopping to the local charity shops to and buy things to decorate her room and collect. Her chatty nature brightens our home as she sits by the front door and chats to all the staff and visitors who are coming and going. Donna has an extremely sweet tooth and loves ice-cream and chocolate; she knows the joy that a sweet treat can bring so loves offering chocolate and biscuits to those around her, unless of course they’ve already brought some for her!
Her vibrant personality and incredible stories make her a sociable and popular figure here at Campsie View; “Donna would get a piece at anybody’s door!” says Gillian, our activities coordinator.
