Kevin the Caring Barber Brings Smiles and Style

Kevin the caring barber at Campsie View Care Home

At Campsie View Care Home, we know that good care goes beyond physical health. It’s about dignity, self-confidence, and the small everyday moments that help our residents feel like themselves. This week, our gentlemen enjoyed one of those special moments as we welcomed back Kevin the Caring Barber – a regular visitor who brings more than just his scissors and comb.

Kevin’s visits are always a highlight. With his warm personality and natural way of connecting with people, he offers a traditional barbershop experience that goes far beyond a trim. Yes, there are tidy haircuts, beard shaves, and the odd eyebrow spruce-up, but there’s also music, banter and the chance for the men to get together, chat and share a few laughs. The salon quickly fills with easy conversation and the occasional cheeky joke – and by the end of the day, not only do our gents look sharper, they feel lifted too.

For many older men, especially those moving into care, feeling presentable and well-groomed is closely tied to a sense of identity. It’s not about vanity – it’s about pride. A clean shave, a neat haircut, a splash of aftershave – these are familiar routines that help reinforce who they are. Kevin understands that, and that’s why he takes the time with each gentleman, making it a personal experience, not just a task to get through.

But grooming is only part of the story.

Adjusting to life in a care home can be more challenging for men. Research has highlighted that older men are at a higher risk of loneliness, particularly in group settings where they may be more reluctant to speak openly or join in. At Campsie View, we recognise this, and we take real care to support our male residents in ways that feel natural and welcoming to them.

That’s why we introduced our Men’s Club – a regular fixture designed to bring the gentlemen together in a relaxed and friendly setting. There’s no pressure, no formality, just the chance to connect through shared interests and enjoy some good company. Whether it's a competitive round of dominoes, a quiet game of darts, or an afternoon painting session, the Men’s Club offers something for everyone.

And of course, no gathering would be complete without tea and a few treats. A biscuit or bit of chocolate can go a long way in creating a warm, social atmosphere where stories are shared and new friendships begin.

What makes Campsie View different is the thought we put into the little things. We know that support looks different for everyone. For some of our gentlemen, it’s about having a space to talk one-on-one. For others, it’s finding comfort in routine, or reconnecting with a lifelong interest. It’s why we tailor our approach to each resident, ensuring that no one is left feeling isolated or overlooked.

Whether it’s the buzz of clippers in the salon or the gentle clatter of dominoes in the lounge, these are the sounds of men being seen, heard, and valued. Our aim is to help every gentleman here feel his best – not just on the outside, but in his sense of belonging, self-worth, and purpose. If you'd like to find out more about how we support our residents to feel part of the community at Campsie View Care Home please get in touch, we'd be very happy to invite you to join us for one of our many events or activities.
